It takes ninety seconds and it is the single highest-return safety action you can take.
Never send money. Never share ID documents, passport scans, bank details or copies of utility bills, no matter how compelling the story. If someone asks for money within the first month, they are running a script; block them and report them to the platform. Spanish police confirm that the overwhelming majority of romance-scam cases they see begin with a small, plausible request that escalates over three to six weeks.
Always tell one friend where the first date is and roughly when you expect to be home. Share your live location for the duration of the meeting via WhatsApp or Find My. Meet in a public, well-lit place — a busy tapas bar, a café on a main street, a hotel lobby — and keep the first meeting under ninety minutes. Two shorter dates beat one long one, especially early.
The one setting nobody mentions: turn off 'distance shown' or 'neighbourhood shown' on any app that reveals it. On Bumble, Hinge and Tinder this is buried three menus deep.
