The perfect first date in Spain is short (sixty to ninety minutes), public, walkable and cheap enough that a second round of drinks does not create pressure on either side. Vermut at noon on a Saturday, or a caña after work at 20:00 on a Thursday, are the two safest formats in the country. Skip dinner on a first date — three hours across a table is too much commitment for two strangers.
Location matters more than budget. Pick a bar you actually love, within walking distance of a good post-drink alternative in case the conversation is flowing. A charming small square with two or three bars around it — Plaza de Olavide in Madrid, Plaça del Sol in Barcelona, Plaza del Negrito in Valencia — is worth ten fancier venues.
Timing: propose a specific bar and a specific time in your first message rather than asking 'when are you free?'. Decision fatigue kills more first dates than bad conversation does. 'Vermut at Casa Camacho Saturday at 13:00?' works ninety percent better than 'we should grab a drink some time'.
The one question that changes everything: 'What's one thing you're excited about this month?' It skips the small talk, reveals real values within a single answer, and gives you at least three natural follow-ups. Ask it in the first twenty minutes. The date almost always improves from that point on.
