A great first-date restaurant in Barcelona needs three things: enough noise to be lively but never so loud you have to shout across the table, a menu that comfortably suits both vegetarians and omnivores, and staff that will let you linger without hovering. Get all three right and even a nervous first date settles into itself within twenty minutes.

Places to avoid on a first date, even though they are excellent restaurants: Tickets (too much of a scene), Enigma (way too much of a statement), and any restaurant on Las Ramblas without exception. Save the statement dinners for the fourth or fifth date.
Book for 21:00 or 21:30, ask for a corner table when you reserve, and pick a restaurant within walking distance of a good post-dinner bar. Walking somewhere else together after the plates are cleared is where the second-date decision actually gets made.
