The 30-Day Expat Dating Checklist for Spain

Day one to day thirty — the exact playbook we give new arrivals.

Days one to three: get a Spanish phone number the day you arrive (a Yoigo or Simyo prepaid SIM will do), take a fresh set of profile photos in daylight this weekend, and download exactly two dating apps — Bumble plus one intent app suited to your age bracket (Hinge for 25–35, Meetic for 35+, EliteSingles for 30+ professionals). Do not download five. Two is the entire ceiling for the first month.

Week two: join one language exchange and one hobby group that meets at least weekly. Padel, running, salsa, choir, book club — any of them will do, as long as the same people are there every week. The hobby group is the anchor; the language exchange is the accelerator.

Weeks three and four: plan four dates. Two from the apps, two from the offline groups. Ask locals for restaurant recommendations rather than defaulting to Google Maps — they will happily give you their favourites, and half the time the best places in any Spanish city aren't listed anywhere in English.

Day thirty: reassess honestly. If you have not had at least three genuine coffee-length dates in the first month, refresh your photos, rewrite your bio, and swap in a different second app. If you have had three or more, keep everything exactly as it is for another sixty days. The people who tinker constantly usually do worse than the people who commit to a single approach for a full quarter.
